Welcome to Grade 2!

Second Grade

Readers are moving more and more into deeper texts that require them to think about their reading. They are connecting deeply with the text frequently and reading to learn more than learning to read. I support them as they comprehend what they are reading as they grow every day.  Our Reading to Learn focus is making inferences using the Super Kids Reading Series and learning to determine the importance of details, events, & characters in all forms of literature.  Grade 2 is always developing and growing our abilities to read with oral accuracy, expression and fluency. Number Talks are an important part of our daily math lessons. It is a great way to review what has been taught and introduce new skills. Students learn how math is used every day in the real world. Second Grade is learning daily the importance to prepare for our Sacraments. We know that the Church helps us to love God and others as Jesus did. We are preparing for mass by learning the parts of a mass as we recognize and understand that God calls each of us to take personal responsibility to care for the world and as the precious gift he has entrusted to us. Social Studies  learning target is to describe how working out problems with others is good citizenship and the importance of working together in communities. I have teamed up with Discover Dairy and their Adopt a Cow Program. The students will be learning about our host farm and adopted calf. As the cow grows, updates will be sent to the class, so the students can learn about cows and the dairy industry. We will use the maker space environment to work together as we explore farming. This month our project will be to build a cow stall.  Grade 2 loves to make observations, ask questions, and form  hypothesis about objects, organisms, and the environment. We gather information, make predictions based on observed patterns and represent the data in graphs and charts. We read and write about science and the world using books and technology. Students are able to articulate their observations of the natural world and formulate conclusions. We use technology resources to conduct research, demonstrate creative and critical thinking, and communicate and work collaboratively.

Grade 2 embraces the "Yes I Can" approach to learning. The boys and girls are encouraged to always try their best as they build confidence with new or difficult tasks!

Mrs. Martineau

Hi my name is Mrs. Martineau and I am so excited to be teaching 2nd grade at St. Matthew School. I have been teaching for over 20 years and this will be my seventh year teaching second grade . I have  degrees  from Endicott College  specializing in Early Childhood Education and studied elementary education & Psychology at Central Connecticut State University. I have taught many grades including Kindergarten, Pre-Kindergarten, Fourth and Third Grades. I believe that all students should be given the opportunity to learn at their developmental level to make them a successful, productive, active member of a classroom community.  Teaching in a Catholic School allows growth through prayer, Bible stories, and  developing the students  personal relationship with Jesus. The Second Grade  class prepares for First  Reconciliation and then First Holy Communion.  I love teaching because I love making learning fun for others. I strive to make learning fun, engaging, and accessible to all of my students. I believe deeply in student-centered learning and am always looking for new and creative ways to present the curriculum. I have a passion for helping all children reach their potential and love to challenge students to be curious and take chances when learning.
